Guardian Early Learning
Pascoe Vale
Project:
Guardian Early Learning
Location:
Cumberland Road, Pascoe vale
Commissioned:
2020
Description:
Designed for 134 children, and benefiting from a generous 1,350-square-metre site, Cumberland, a Guardian childcare centre, was able to make use of the outdoor spaces (at ground level) as much as creating large, protected terraces on the upper level. So rather than simply frame the centre by glass balustrades, the building is surrounded by distinctive perforated aluminium fin-like structures – functioning as screens as well as appearing as a front fence. In three colours, including pink and mauve and in different widths, these battens also animate the building as well as provides an element of surprise in the suburban street. Although unplanned, the outline of the centre is similar in shape to a butterfly, with the activity rooms on both levels leading directly to the garden or, alternatively, to the generous terraces. The design not only allows for maximum daylight but blurs the lines between indoors and out. As with all the childcare centres designed by Architecton, the interior colour palette is vibrant and, as importantly, hard-wearing given the intended use and the need to be functional for 20+ years.
