McKillop House
Melbourne

12-14-mckillop-008

Project:

McKillop House

Location:

McKillop Street, Melbourne

Commissioned:

2023

Description:

Spread over four levels, the brief was to transform these buildings into offices, with the client earmarking a number of the levels for their own use. Rather than try and mimic the past, there’s a clear yet subtle delineation between the past and present – with new levels (including a rooftop terrace) expressed in steel and glass. While the black glass creates a more recessive appearance from the well-travelled pedestrian street, it also diffuses the western sunlight and thoughtfully picks up on the black glass used for the nearby National Australia Bank building. Here, it was not a case of recreating the past, but importantly, responding to it and providing contemporary office spaces that expand across entire floors – varying in area from 200 to 300 square metres.
